Finding a better life in the U.S. was not a guarantee for Edwing Hernandez when he immigrated with his wife from Venezuela in 2012.
But it was a possibility.
He had $3,000 in his pocket, and a simple dream.
"For me at that moment, [my dream] was to be in a safe country with freedom of speech and be able to live and have my basic needs covered," said Hernandez, 34, of Union City.
For years, Hernandez worked physically-demanding jobs and long hours, sometimes 14 a day, commuting two hours to and from work, for only $8 an hour.

Morris County Man, 66, Stabbed While Reading Book At Port Authority Bus Terminal: Police
A 66-year-old Morris County man was stabbed at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan on Monday, April 22, authorities said.
Michael McCloskey, 42, of California, was taken into custody by Port Authority police officers who heard the victim's screams at the north subway mezzanine level of the terminal just before 5:45 a.m., Port Authority Police of New York and New Jersey, and its PBA said.

Stephen Gallagher, Former Police Chief In Morris County, Dies At 66
Stephen Gallagher, who served as police chief in Hanover Township, died recently at the age of 66, according to his obituary.
Born in Montclair, Gallagher spent most of his life in Morris Plains and had recently moved to Waretown, his obituary reads. After earning his degree from the College of St. Elizabeth, Gallagher became Chief of Police for the Township of Hanover, retiring in 2016 after 34 years serving the township, according to his obituary.

A Forked River woman is fighting for her veteran son to return to the U.S. after he was severely injured in Costa Rica, according to a fundraising campaign.
On a GoFundMe page, Debra Vargas said that her son Codey Vargas suffered several injuries in an accident, including severe head trauma, a collapsed lung, several fractured ribs, paralyzed intestines, pneumonia, facial fractures, and several scrapes. Codey's accident happened on Wednesday, Mar. 20, but Debra wasn't aware of it until the U.S. embassy in Costa Rica told her on Tuesday, Apr. 2.
