Harvey Lacrosse Cops Second Straight Title

KATONAH, N.Y. – Harvey School lacrosse star midfielder Brandon Hickey evaded the South Kent defense and flicked the game-winning goal into the net with nine seconds remaining in the game Saturday to lift the Cavaliers to a thrilling 7-6 victory in the Hudson Valley Athletic League championship.

The Cavs, who finished the season with a near-perfect 16-1 record, played to a 6-6 tie with their South Kent rivals until their Hickey, who surpassed 100 career goals earlier this spring, put across the winning goal.

Luc Chatelain opened the scoring for South Kent in the second minute of the game, but Hickey, who would have three goals in the game, fired home the equalizer less than a minute later. Rookie sensation Connor Wilson put Harvey ahead 2-1 at the end of the first quarter and there was no scoring in defensive second quarter.

Cody Champagne and Kenan Williams tallied for South Kent in the third quarter to forge a 5-2 lead, but single goals from Hickey and Ricky Schulman for the Cavaliers got them closer as South Kent held a 5-4 lead after three quarters.

Schulman scored again in the second minute of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5 and senior stalwart Tim Ehlberg gave Harvey the lead in the sixth minute. South Kent kept pressing and Ben Weltch tied the game with less than three minutes remaining when Harvey coach Jason Hill called a timeout to settle things down.

When play resumed, both sides battle for the last two minutes until Hickey took the ball, got by his defenders, took aim and fired the game-winning shot passed the South Kent goalkeeper.

The goalies for both team made several spectacular saves, with James Underwood stopping 12 shots for the winners.
