School Board Names New John Jay Guidance Director

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – The Katonah-Lewisboro School District has appointed a new director of guidance for John Jay High School.

The Board of Education named Marisa Merlino the school’s interim director of guidance this week, replacing Christopher Griffin, who resigned last month to take a position with the Scarsdale School District.

Merlino comes to Katonah-Lewisboro from the Millbrook Central School District, where she served as interim assistant principal at Millbrook High School during the 2011-12 school year.

"I am honored and enthusiastic to become part of the Katonah-Lewisboro school community,” Merlino said. “I look to forward to working with and supporting the staff, students and parents of the district."

She will begin her new role on Aug. 15.

“John Jay High School is now fully staffed and prepared for the start of the school year,” said Board of Education President Mark Lipton. “After a thorough search and hiring process, the board is pleased to appoint Ms. Merlino. John Jay is fortunate to have such a good balance of returning and new leadership.”

Schools Superintendent Paul Kreutzer said that Merlino’s experience in the guidance field will be a boon to the administration and the student body.

“Ms. Merlino joins us with nine years of administrative leadership experience, and we believe she will be an excellent addition to our high school,” he said. “We are pleased to welcome her as we begin the new school year.”

Prior to her work in Millbrook, Merlino was director of guidance, at-risk and health services in the Hyde Park Central School District for five years. Among her responsibilities were supervising and evaluating staff members, coordinating college fairs, creating the master schedule and course selection guide, organizing testing, and supervising the alternative education program. She also chaired the comprehensive school health advisory committee.

Earlier in her career, Merlino served as a school counselor at Van Wyck Junior High School in the Wappingers Central School District, and was student support services coordinator at the Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center – Ulster BOCES. She holds a master's degree in school counseling from the Sage Colleges in Troy, N.Y.
