Following a rash of violent incidents earlier this year involving New Rochelle High School students - including the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old - the city's continuing recovery efforts were highlighted in a New York Times report published on Friday.

In January, there were two stabbings involving students - including the fatal incident involving Valaree Schwab outside of Dunkin’ Donuts on North Avenue - and a third attack by a group of students within the span of several days, leading to criminal charges for multiple teenagers in New Rochelle.

In the aftermath of the incidents, multiple students are facing charges that include murder, manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon and gang assault. The incidents have led to a marked increase in police presence around the high school and the North Avenue corridor. It has also led to the creation of a task force designed to decrease violence amongst students in the area.

The New York Times report highlights many of the steps that have been taken in the wake of the violent incidents, including the task force, and emphasizes the diversity of the students in the school district, with a quote from New Rochelle High School Principal Reggie Richardson that notes that “this is one of the few schools, probably in the country, where the child of a Fortune 500 executive or CEO could be in the same class as a homeless child.”
