CROSS RIVER, N.Y. -- The Katonah-Lewisboro school board will hold a vote on six proposed tennis courts for the John Jay  campus.

The board, which would vote on June 19, would decide whether to accept the labor and material as a gift. The tennis courts are being privately funded by the Katonah Lewisboro Community Tennis Association (KLCTA).

The Board of Education made its scheduling decision at its June 5 meeting, after Interim Schools Superintendent Michael Jumper gave a status update presentation. According to Jumper, KLCTA had raised $475,000 to date and would likely have $500,000 raised by June 19. The estimated total cost of the work for 2014 is $464,365. If the work is done in 2015, the cost is estimated to increase to $475,000, according to Jumper, citing higher wage and material rates. However, the additional $25,000 of private funding could be held in contingency.

The courts are proposed to be built on a site in front of the middle and high schools that is currently used as a softball field, which would be relocated behind the middle school.

The estimated cost of maintenance for the courts is $80,000 over a 16-year period, with repainting and pressure washing being among the expenses.

School board member Peter Treyz was not supportive of accepting the gift unless the future maintenance is paid for with private funding. Board President Charles Day, however, noted that money would be saved, mentioning transportation.

Board member Stephanie Tobin disagreed with Treyz’s suggestion and felt that maintenance is the district’s responsibility. She also praised the fund-raising initiative for the courts.
