John Jay High School Officials: New Programs Have Been Successful

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. -- John Jay High School officials say the new programs under way for the 2013-14 school year have been a success.

John Jay High School recently implemented Algebra 1 and Algebra 1 Extended, the first math courses aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), according to a news release from the district. The high school's World Language Program "continues to flourish" and has been expanded to include Level 3 honors courses for all languages, according to the release.

The high school has also undergone some technology upgrades, including the accommodation of students’ personal laptops and mobile devices, "enabling them to connect to the District’s network for curricular purposes," according to the release.

"This capacity for a 'Bring Your Own Device' environment is designed for classes wherein the teacher wants students to use technology frequently for the purposes of advancing the teaching and learning experience," district representatives said in the release. "It allows for network connections with some regulations, such as web filtering, in order to ensure Internet safety and appropriate use. The High School does have mobile devices available for those students who are not able to bring their own; these devices can be borrowed on an as-needed basis."
