PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Former Rep. Nan Hayworth has conceded to Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney in the race for New York's 18th Congressional District.

Hayworth, the Republican candidate, announced her concession on her campaign's Facebook page Wednesday.

"This was a narrow race, for sure. Congressman Maloney currently leads by just over one percent of total votes cast," she said in the statement. "At this moment, even allowing for our likely majority of the absentee ballots, we don't see a path to victory."

Hayworth added: "I just got off the phone with Congressman Maloney and congratulated him on his victory and wished him well. We both agree that all of the votes will be counted and we will respect the final tally."

In a conference call with reporters, Maloney, the Democratic candidate, announced Hayworth's concession. Referring to the concession, Maloney noted that Hayworth has "integrity" and "courage" to make a difficult decision.

Maloney attributed his victory to what he called a “massive grassroots effort.” Speaking of his campaign, Maloney noted that they knocked on 60,000 doors in the last four days.

Maloney repeatedly emphasized bipartisanship, both on his record and in going forward.

Asked about effectiveness in light of the Republicans expanding their House majority, Maloney noted that when you are working in the minority, success depends on reaching across the aisle. He cited several issues of interest for common ground, including a federal review of a proposed energy price hike, as examples. He also noted the support that he received from the other side during his campaign, including from state Sen. Greg Ball.

Maloney was asked by a reporter to weigh in on what role he thinks Hillary Clinton's endorsement played. Maloney explained that he had not spoken to her since the race was called, referring to the Associated Press. However, he added that a member of her staff expressed congratulations

Regarding Clinton's support, Maloney said, “I appreciate her help very much."

Maloney also said, “I appreciate her help very much.”

The race was a rematch of 2012, when Maloney unseated the then-incumbent Hayworth.

Maloney's campaign declared victory the previous night in a press release, claiming that 100 percent of precincts have reported and that he has a 1,744-vote lead.

"I want to congratulate Congresswoman Nan Hayworth on a hard-fought campaign and the passion of her and her supporters; Hudson Valley voters have once again have spoken and we have won," Maloney said in his previous statement. "We have fought this campaign as Democrats and Republicans but we must end it as Americans, proud of our common country and committed to put aide our partisan differences and work for the good of all."

According to unofficial results posed by the New York State Board of Elections, Maloney leads with 84,415 votes (47.58 percent) to 81,625 (46.01percent) for Hayworth. According to the results, all 691 election districts have been reported.

The 18th Congressional District includes all of Putnam and part of Northern Westchester.
