The act was signed into law by Congress in 1990 and, among other things, required that all public buildings have appropriate access and egress for the disabled.
The department will be moving into the new police station, located in the Orchard Square at Cross River Shopping Center, right behind DeCicco’s and next to the Town Court and other town offices, such as the Planning Board, the Assessor and the Building Department.
“It’s a great location for the police station,” said Lewisboro Supervisor Peter Parsons. “Insofar as Lewisboro has a hub, Cross River is it. Goldens Bridge may be the most populated area in town, but it sure isn’t central. Cross River is ideal. The Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps is there and so is the high school and middle school."
What about the old building on Spring Street? “The State Police were looking for space, so we offered it to them,” said Parsons. “They’re very crowded in Somers. We’re in the process of repainting it and sprucing it up right now, so they can move in.”
Lewisboro would benefit from having a State Police Barracks in town, he said, as well as a centrally located local police force. That state police cars will be traveling through town on a regular basis is a bonus, he said.
