The crash occurred at about 5 a.m. on the eastbound side of I-84 between Exits 16 and 17 after two tractor-trailers crashed and one burst into flames, state police said.

Despite the huge fire, only minor injuries were reported, state police said.

Initially, I-84 was closed for hours in both directions on that stretch of the highway, the main travel way between Danbury and Waterbury, while crews worked to clear the scene, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The westbound lanes of I-84 reopened at about 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The eastbound lanes remained closed as of 9 a.m., according to state police.

Traffic was being detoured off I-84 east at Exit 16 to Strongtown Road in Southbury, DOT said.
