The SAA event was founded in 1987 as Swim Across Long Island Sound, and has grown into 13 swims in five states -- including a 22-mile marathon.

At Saturday's event, swimmers competed individually, or as a part of a team, and had a choice of 2K, 5K or 10K distances.

Kayakers, boaters and off-site swimmers also raised money for the cause.

According to the event web site, the Long Island Sound event had raised over half of its goal of $! million.
