LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- The third annual Church Tavern Biathlon, presented by St. John’s Episcopal Parish, held a record-breaking event on Labor Day, with more than 130 area competitors and raising more than $5,300 for local charities.

Participants biked a challenging seven-mile course up Church Tavern Road and past Lake Truesdale, followed by a four-mile run up Church Tavern and back to the finish line.

In the women’s division, South Salem's Florence Chrietien, who finished in second place overall last year, took top honors and first place overall with a finish time of 51:18, followed by Nancy Rowe of Ridgefield, Conn., at 1:04 and Laurel Donnell-Fink of Brookline, Mass. at 1:06. Malcolm Piper of White Plains was the top male finisher (second overall) with a time of 52:25, followed by Jan Schole of Ridgefield, Conn, at 54:40 and Eric Opdyke of Stamford, Conn. at 55:10.

South Salem's Julian Ellin and Charlie Conroy of Belmont, Mass., defended their 2012 title as the winning relay team, crossing the finish at 52:35.

Top finishers in each category received an engraved pewter tankard, in honor of a former St. John’s Church building that served as a Colonial-era pub, the “Church Tavern.”  Racers and supporters celebrated with a barbecue in the churchyard, featuring live music by Quadrasaurus, beverages by Captain Lawrence Brewery, and a kids’ waterslide.

Proceeds from the event will benefit three St. John’s outreach programs: Carpenter’s Kids, supporting Tanzanian HIV/AIDS orphans; The Wounded Warrior Project, aiding injured service members; and The Community Center of Northern Westchester, helping those in need with food, clothing and services.
