Sixth-inning rally lifts Lewisboro to Championship

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- Facing an eight-run deficit with two innings remaining might be enough to deflate some teams, but not Lewisboro. Lewisboro came charging back, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to record an improbable 10-9 win over Mount Kisco in the Westchester-Putnam Baseball Asoociation 10-year-old final at Lakeland High School, Saturday.

Chris Munoz scored the winning run, with two outs, when Chris Orifici ripped a ball that was misplayed. “This feels great,” said the 10-year-old Orifici, a sixth-grader-to-be at John Jay (Cross River) Middle School. “This has been the best travel season ever.”

Lewisboro also won the District 33 Little League Baseball 9-10-year-old title. Orifici remained calm before stepping into the box.

“Coach (Munoz) told me to relax and said if I got a hit, we would win the game,“ Orifici said. “So I took a deep breath before I stepped in.”  Lewisboro scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning before its memorable sixth-inning rally.

“I told the boys that we played a lot of games and that we have come back,” Lewisboro manager Lou Munoz said. “They just needed to stay in there and get base runners, which is what they did. “Once we got that first player on base in the fifth, they all started to feel that they could do it.”

Drew Kersh led off the sixth with a walk and after Lewisboro batted around, Kersh singled in Rich Jones with the equalizer. Then Orifici, who singled earlier in the inning, brought in Munoz. Jones and Munoz each had two-run singles in the inning.

“I feel that all 11 kids on the team are my sons,” Munoz said. “I am so proud of them. They are a bunch of terrific kids.” Orifici said the team received a major boost from the crowd. “The parents definitely helped us win this championship,” Orifici said. “We could all hear them cheering for us.”
