Registration Open For South Salem Biathlon

SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. – Registration is now open for the second annual St. John’s Episcopal Church‘s Church Tavern Biathlon in South Salem.

The race will consist of a 6.5-mile bike route and a 4-mile run. One of the main features of both courses is a steep trip up Church Tavern Road, which is how the event got its name. The road was named after St. John’s Church because the church functioned as a tavern during part of its life in the late 1700s.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 3, rain or shine, at St. John’s Church, 82 Spring St. The course can be done individually or as a two-person relay team.

Race organizer Brian Stempel says this year’s event promises more tankard awards for the winners, better course markings and another free barbecue. To register for the race, log on to http://www.raceit.com/search/event.aspx?id=12328.

Proceeds from the race will help the church in its charitable endeavors. Last year, the event raised $1,500, which was donated to The Carpenter’s Kids Program, the Community Center of Northern Westchester and The Wounded Warrior Project.
