Germany took a 2-0 lead in the first half. Katie Reinprecht and Katelyn Falgowski combined to work for a goal for the U.S., with the ball getting deflected into the cage off the stick of a German player. The U.S. had a one-player advantage in the final two minutes after a penalty was called on the Germans, but the Americans could not get the tying goal.

New Zealand also advanced to the semifinals. The other two semifinalists had not yet been determined.

The U.S. team included Mohegan Lake native and Lakeland High grad Melissa Gonzalez. After winning their first four games, including upsets of Argentina and Australia, the U.S. dropped its last two contest. Great Britain earned the top seed in Group B with a win over the U.S. in the final game of pool play.

Germany entered the medal round after finishing third in Group B, behind Netherlands and New Zealand.
