The game is on in the gym at Kennedy Catholic High School from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20. Go and shoot some hoops, or just go and cheer — in memory of Maureen McAvoy.

Friends, family and fellow students of Maureen McAvoy will be coming together for the Eighth Annual celebration of “Maureen’s Hoops for Hope.”

Over the years, the participants have raised more than $40,000 and have been officially recognized for their donations by Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital for the past three years. McAvoy was a member of the Kennedy Class of 2006. In October 2007 she died of brain cancer.

Among the tournament’s organizers is Maureen’s sister, Siobhan, a 2007 graduate of Kennedy.

“It’s been eight years since my sister passed, and not a day goes by that I don’t think of her and miss her dearly,” Siobhan said. “But to know that those same eight years later, her friends and family are still coming together to make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer is comforting.”

Teams of Kennedy students, alumni and faculty will join her family and friends in the five-on-five basketball tournament. Food and other refreshments will be plentiful and T-shirts will be sold. A 50-50 raffle will add another dimension.

The suggested admission price is $8 at the door. All proceeds will be donated to childhood brain tumor research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
