John Jay's Rosenthal Tops Teammate for Title

HARRISON, N.Y. - After the first five seconds of the match, Mike Rosenthal had to put aside the fact that he was wrestling his John Jay-Cross River teammate, workout partner and good friend, Billy Gossett.

“It was not who I was wrestling, but what I was wrestling for,” Rosenthal said. The teammates were wrestling for the 182-pound title in a Section 1 Large School Championship Qualifier at Harrison, Saturday.

Rosenthal went on to pin Gossett in the first period. The two finalists, along with seven of their teammates, who placed in the top four in their respective weight classes, advanced to the Section 1 Large School Championship/New York State Qualifer, Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 11-12.

The first day of wrestling will be held at Clarkstown South High School, beginning 9 a.m. Wrestling will resume with the semifinals, Sunday, 9 a.m., at the Goldstein Center on the campus of Pace University in Pleasantville. The finals are scheduled for 4 p.m.

Prior to the final, Rosenthal and Gossett did a special handshake, and even laughed while they were doing it. Through the first 70 seconds of the match, the two wrestlers were still on their feet with neither attempting a shot.

“It changes our approach because we know each other so well,” said Rosenthal of wrestling Gossett. “I heard someone yell out, ‘One minute.’ Through that time we were just hand fighting and looking to get good position.”

Rosenthal was happy that he won, but not at the expense of Gossett.

Declan Myer was John Jay’s other champion on the day, winning the 170-pound title. Myer decisioned Brett Perry of John Jay-East Fishkill, 3-1 in overtime. “I was glad that Declan got the win in overtime because he had been beaten by this same kid,” Rosenthal said.
