John Jay Football Hosts Rye In Pivotal Matchup

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – The John Jay-Cross River High School football team will host Rye at 7 p.m. Saturday in a game that will be pivotal for both teams.

Rye is 3-1 this season, with the lone blemish coming against Sleepy Hollow, which hadn’t beaten Rye since 1989. John Jay is 2-2 with losses to Sleepy Hollow and Harrison.

If John Jay loses on Saturday, the Indians could miss the playoffs entirely. John Jay would fall to 2-3 and would likely need to win its final two games just to have a chance to get into the postseason.

Rye needs the win to help position itself in the standings of the loaded Class A. Teams including Harrison, Sleepy Hollow and Walter Panas all sit above the Garnets, so a loss would hurt Rye this week.

Rye has been strong on defense this season and has given up 14 points or less in each of its four games, including last week’s 28-0 shutout against Horace Greeley.

But John Jay has the most explosive offense the Garnets have seen this season as the Indians have averaged 37.8 points per game.

The key to this game will be John Jay quarterback Tyler Keech. When Keech is at the top of his game, he is one of the best quarterbacks in Section 1. He has all the skills necessary to break through Rye’s defense in this game.

John Jay will also be fired up after a 43-36 upset loss at Sleepy Hollow last week. The Indians looked to be a favorite to win the section championship before the season began but have suffered two crushing losses to Harrison and Sleepy Hollow.

If the Indians are going to right the ship, then they must do so on Saturday.
