John Jay Closes Regular Season With Tie

RYE, N.Y. -- In a possible prelude to a Section 1 Division II Ice Hockey Championship matchup, John Jay-Cross River and Rye skated to a 3-3 overtime tie Wednesday at Playland Ice Casino.

It was the regular-season finale for both teams with John Jay finishing 14-5-1 and Rye at 13-5-2.

The Section 1 Ice Hockey Championships seeding meeting is Thursday. Pelham is going to be the first seed with Brewster, John Jay and Rye vying for the second seed. Brewster, the Conference I League B champion has the advantage over John Jay and Rye for the second seed.

Rye forced overtime when senior Kirk Holmes scored his second goal of the game with 2:53 remaining in regulation.

John Jay goalie Matt Lanza preserved the tie with 44 saves, including one with one-tenth of a second remaining in regulation. Defenseman Justin Uzcategui ripped a shot from the point that Jack O’Brien deflected, but Lanza’s quick glove hand snared the puck.

Rye fans thought their team had the game won in overtime, but Chris Lipari’s shot landed on the outside of the net.

John Jay led 1-0 after one on a Shawn Smith goal. Rye would answer with a pair of goals in a span of 73 seconds in the second period. Cal Hynson evened the score at 3:30 and Holmes netted his first at 4:43. Senior Ryan Rogers assisted both goals. John Jay countered with two goals to regain the lead. Jack Grimm scored shorthanded, taking the puck down the right wing and breaking in on Rye goalie Aidan Talgo with 5:52 in the period. John Jay regained the lead on a Dan Killea goal with 2:11 remaining in the second.
