John Jay-Cross River wrestling coach Bill Swertfager walked out of the Patriot Wrestling Tournament, Saturday with a huge smile on his face.
His team surpassed his and the coaching staffs expectations with five John Jay finalists, including three champions Alex Lambiotte (132), Mike Rosenthal (195) and Ethan Smith (220). Graham Bocklet (138) and Billy Gossett (182) each finished second, Declan Myer (170) placed third and Louis Talia (285) was fourth.
If you told me we were going to place nine kids Friday in this tournament, I would have told you were crazy, Swertfager said. Alex wrestled the best that I have ever seen him. His aggression was the key to his success this weekend.
He continued, Ethan literally came out of nowhere to pin every one of his opponents. The confidence he exudes in his ability is really refreshing. Mike broke his opponent in the second period of the finals when he was disqualified for being called for stalling for a fourth time. Mike was relentless on top and smothered him.
