Harvey School Runner Stops To Help An Opponent

KATONAH, N.Y. ? Harvey School freshman Nick Reber displayed what his coach called "selfless" sportsmanship Wednesday when he stopped during a cross country race to assist a fellow runner in distress.

Reber stopped when he saw that the other runner was having difficulty breathing in a race at the Forman School in Litchfield, Conn. Harvey's first-year cross-country coach Michael Lauria said Reber sought the aid of a Forman parent inside one of the academic buildings and stayed until the runner was feeling better.

Reber then rejoined the race and fought through his own fatigue to sprint the last three-quarters of a mile to make up his lost time. Lauria described Reber's conduct as a “selfless action.”

Harvey sophomore Sam Mackiewicz leads the Cavaliers in the first two weeks of the cross country season, having run two first place finishes in a row before placing second Wednesday. The 3-mile race included teams from Chase, Watkinson, South Kent and Forman.

Mackiewicz finished second to Chase's Kendrick Lechner Wednesday. Harvey’s three other runners, Reber, Alec Roslin and sophomore Marshall Euchner, improved their times from last week's meet. Reber's accomplishment was the more impressive because he took time to help a fellow athlete.
