KATONAH, N.Y. ? The name Cavaliers had a sweet twist for Harvey School grad Maddy Haller Sunday when Duke upset Virginia in the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament.
The South Salem resident helped the 15th-ranked Blue Devils defeat the No. 2 Virginia Cavs, 3-1, in the Sweet 16 round of the tourney. Meanwhile, back in Katonah, Haller was being cheered on by the Cavaliers at Harvey, where she played soccer in 2009.
Harvey communications director Chris DelCampo said the campus was rooting for Haller and Duke.
Haller, a senior, has started 11 of 19 matches on defense for Duke. An all-league player for Harvey, Haller has helped lead Duke to five shutouts this year. She played a key role in Duke’s run for the 2011 NCAA championship last year before the Blue Devils lost the title game, 1-0, to Stanford. She is a history major with a 3.58 grade-point average.
Duke meets Michigan, which upset No. 1 Penn State, in Friday's quarterfinal round.
