The NCAA Division I Softball Championships begin Friday with former Section 1 standouts playing.
Alabama, currently ranked second in the nation, is led by first baseman and senior Cassie Reilly-Boccia. The 2008 Yorktown graduate, who was an impact player on consecutive Section 1 Class AA championship teams (2007, '08) has been a four-year starter for the Crimson Tide.
Reilly-Boccia is hitting .333 (43-for-129) with seven home runs, 43 RBI and 33 runs scored.
Alabama opens with the University of Tennessee-Martin. Georgia Tech and South Alabama complete the bracket.
Louisiana State University, with sophomore third baseman Tammy Wray of Somers starting, is in College Station, Texas. Eighth-ranked Texas A&M hosts this regional, which also includes Bethune-Cookman and Texas State. LSU opens with Texas State.
Syracuse, with senior third baseman and John Jay-Cross River graduate Gaby Torzilli, is in Tempe, Ariz., along with Long Island University-Brooklyn, Long Beach State and host, third-seeded Arizona State. Syracuse will play Long Beach State.
