CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Two John Jay High School seniors are semi-finalists in one of the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competitions.

Daniel Fulop and Kevin Pawlak were two of 300 students chosen as semi-finalists for the Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS). The students will compete for a total of $1.25 million in awards.

Each of the 300 semi-finalists receives a $1,000 award from the Intel Foundation with an additional $1,000 going to his or her school.

From that select pool, 40 finalists are then invited to Washington, D.C. in March to participate in final judging, display their work in public, meet with notable scientists, and compete for a top award of $100,000.

The semi-finalists were selected from more than 1,700 entrants and represent 190 high schools in more than 30 states.

The 40 finalists will be named on Jan. 23 and will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. from March 7-13. Each finalist receives at least $7,500. Winners will be announced at a black-tie gala at the National Building Museum on March 12.

“Each year, the Intel Science Talent Search honors high school seniors poised to lead in U.S. scientific innovation,” said Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation. “This year these young scientists are talking some of the world’s greatest challenges in topics ranging from environmental conservation solutions to medical treatments.”

Alumni of the Intel talent search have made notable contributions to science and hold more than 100 of the world's most coveted science and math honors, including the Nobel Prize and National Medal of Science.
