LEWISBORO, N.Y. – South Salem’s Kevin Carelli, who is completing his final year as a student in the BOCES Urban Forestry program, won First Place in the tree-climbing event at the annual state-wide Forestry Competition, sponsored by the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and held this year in Cobbleskill, New York.
Over 500 young people from all parts of New York competed in many types of contests, such as saw-cutting, tree identification, plant life, axe-throwing and tree-climbing.
Tree-climbers were instructed to scale a 40-foot tree, walk out on three branches to touch flags and then descend. Carelli, a senior at John Jay High School, completed the task with a time of three minutes, 27 seconds, beating out all other competitors.
