SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. -- First-graders celebrated Thanksgiving friendships on Tuesday, at South Salem’s Meadow Pond Elementary School.
Wearing handmade outfits, the children took part in the school’s annual Corn Festival, entertaining their parents and teachers with songs and enjoying seasonal snacks.
One of the songs was performed using American Sign Language, with the help of music teacher Melissa Richardson who accompanied students on the piano.
Students also recited the historic events, including the Pilgrims’ arrival at Plymouth Rock on the Mayflower, Native Americans teaching settlers how to plant corn, and the friendship between the two groups that led up to the first Thanksgiving meal.
“It is so wonderful to see so many families here,” said Principal Carolann Castellano as she welcomed guests to the festival Thursday. “(The students) have been practicing so hard and they are so excited.”
