Deb D'Agostino, president of the North Salem Board of Education, knew the test would be a challenge for students. "This was a difficult test," said D'Agostino. "It was so different from previous tests that we cannot make a comparison to previous performance." New York State Education Commissioner John B. King Jr. stated in a press release issued on Wednesday that results across the state were down as expected and the "change in scores – which will effectively create a new baseline of student learning – is largely the result of the shift in the assessments to measure the Common Core Standards." All the numbers are a lot to digest, but D'Agostino feels good about how the students in the area performed. "We are a data-driven school district." she said. "We will be analyzing data as it becomes available and will discuss it at upcoming board meetings. We are doing OK." D'Agastino said she is looking forward to getting data for individual students which will allow teachers to help improve individual performance, a sentiment echoed by King in his statement. "We all share the same goal: to make sure all students in New York have the skills and knowledge to be successful in college and careers," King said in a statement. "With the Common Core, we're building a ladder toward that goal; the assessment scores are a measure of where our students are on that ladder and give us a clearer, more accurate picture of the climb ahead."
