KATONAH, N.Y. -- The 2014-15 academic year at The Harvey School in Katonah began Tuesday, Sept. 2, when Headmaster Barry Fenstermacher celebrated the 99th convocation before the entire student body and staff at a morning assembly in the school’s Lasdon Theater in The Walker Center for the Arts.
Fenstermacher welcomed 350 students, including the six newest members of the school’s International Student Program, three from China, one from Taiwan, one from Korea and another from Germany. This year’s group of students from abroad raised the total to 12 who are part of Harvey’s student body as the six Chinese students who came to study in Katonah last year in the school’s first year of the ISP are returning.
“It's an exciting time as we continue to grow and diversify the international student population at Harvey,” said Julia Gooding, associate director of admissions, who coordinates the school’s ISP and teaches a course on Mandarin language.
“Our newest additions are a talented and varied group,” Gooding added, “and we're looking forward to getting to know them better while they integrate and begin contributing to classes and the community.”
Harvey’s ISP students live in campus dormitories during the school week and stay with host families on weekends. They are fully immersed in the school’s regular academic program and participate in extracurricular activities. They will attend Harvey until they graduate with their respective classes.
Tuesday’s schedule included a student orientation and adviser meetings, with classes following the convocation at 8:50 a.m.
