CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – The Katonah-Lewisboro School District Board of Education is considering the authorization of the Alternative Veterans’ Exemption for qualified veterans and their spouses and is seeking input from the community.
There are three types of tax exemptions that can be implemented at various levels: Wartime Veteran/Non-Combat, Wartime Veteran/Combat Zone and Wartime Veteran/Disabled.
The dollar amount associated with each exemption is calculated based on a set percentage as well as assessed property value or specific dollar amounts multiplied by the latest equalization rate. The Board of Education has discussed establishing basic exemption limits defined in the law.
“The Veterans’ Exemption law was expanded to enable school districts to honor the service of our veterans,” said Assistant Superintendent for Business Michael Jumper. “We want our residents to understand that adoption of an exemption will result in a redistribution of a small portion of the tax levy to all other non-veteran households. It’s important for the Board to hear from members of the community before taking any final action.” The link to the online survey is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Y8FYZNW .
As required by state law, a public hearing on this matter is scheduled for Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Jay High School Library.
In addition, community members, including residents without children in the schools, and commercial property owners are invited to participate in a short survey that will be available at www.klschooldistrict.org from Feb. 2-28.
