CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Sixth-graders at John Jay Middle School in Cross River pulled together to package donations to help victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York City.

The sixth-grade exploration team packaged gifts and supplies for 19 families in Breezy Point. Team teacher Jeanne Kellachan has a personal connection with residents in that area who lost nearly everything in the storm.

“It’s kids helping kids,” Kellachan said.

Kellachan, along with the four other team teachers — Guy Amdur, Mary Dillon, Christine Watroba and Annette Milne — organized the nearly 100 students into 19 groups to do the work.

Each group was assigned one family for whom they collected and packaged donated items. One student in each group was responsible for supplying a large plastic container. The group assembled all of the donations, and labeled each container with the name of the family.

The teachers said they were impressed by the generosity of the parents, students and the community and thanked the custodial staff members, who prepared the cafeteria space for the assembly work.

After preparing the donations for delivery, each student designed a personal card for their “family.” Each included warm thoughts, colorful drawings and an inspirational message.

Kellachan and her husband, along with Dillon, packed up cars and a truck and handed out the donations on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
