LEWIBORO, N.Y. -- Second-grade students at Katonah-Lewisboro’s Meadow Pond Elementary School learned firsthand about Abraham Lincoln’s personal life leading up to his presidency during a special presentation on Feb. 4.

President Lincoln, portrayed by actor Lou Del Bianco, spoke about his upbringing on the prairie, which included enrollment at a old-time "blab" school and two near-death experiences.

“I only had 11 months in school my whole life,” Del Bianco, as Lincoln, said.

A major theme in the president’s life was that of perseverance. Despite his parents being illiterate, Lincoln was determined to learn to read and write. After witnessing a slave auction, he worked hard to become an attorney. Even after losing his first state election, he went on to serve in the Illinois House of Representatives and later the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected president.

While he wasn’t able to enact the freedom of slaves until he was president, he never gave up, eventually ordering the Emancipation Proclamation.

The visit was an informative and entertaining one for the students as they prepared to recognize Presidents Day.
