False Alarm Sends Lewisboro Elementary Into Lockdown

LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- Lewisboro Elementary School went into lockdown late Wednesday morning as a result of a malfunctioning alarm, state police said.

The lockdown has since been lifted. A technical error mistakenly activated the lockdown tone, School Superintendent Paul Kreutzer said in a statement. The building was put on lockdown mode until the police arrived.

"There was never a threat to the safety and well-being of students and staff; this was truly an accident," Kreutzer said in the statement.

The lockdown lasted less than an hour and school resumed as a normal day.

"We thank the Lewisboro Police Department and other responding agencies for their quick response and attention and can ensure you that safety is always our top priority," Kreutzer said.

The Katonah-Lewisboro School District is considering closing Lewisboro Elementary for the fall of 2014. The district has cited declining enrollment and a tight financial situation as reasons why they need to close a school.

The projected savings from a school closure would be $1.7 million, according to the district. However, parents have questioned the need to close the school.

Parents from Increase Miller Elementary School will meet Wednesday night with two school board members to talk about their concerns regarding the possible redistricting of 94 of its students to accommodate the influx of Lewisboro students, if the district moves forward with the school closure.

A public hearing on the closure will be held Thursday, Jan. 16. The school board will take a final vote Jan. 23.

If the board votes in favor of closing the school, the 350 Lewisboro Elementary students would be moved to Increase Miller and Meadow Pond Elementary for the 2014-2015 school year. An additional 46 students would be moved, for a total of 396, or 28.6 percent of all 1,386 students.

The meeting Wednesday is at 7:30 p.m. at the Lewisboro Parks and Recreation Building on 65 Old Bedford Road, Golden's Bridge.
