Air Test Leads To Remediation Of John Jay HS Space

LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- A nonstudent basement space at John Jay High School will undergo remediation following air quality testing, Katonah-Lewisboro interim Superintendent John Goetz confirmed in a community letter. However, he disclosed that, based on results, no remediation is needed at other buildings that were also tested.

The remediation will be done before the start of school, according to Goetz. The start is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 3.

In his letter, Goetz also noted that more results are expected.

"The health and safety of our students and staff is of paramount importance to all of us. Inspections and air quality testing to date indicate that air quality has not been compromised in any of our schools. We expect to receive the results of these additional tests next week, and we will follow up with communication to you in a prompt manner."

Goetz first disclosed the issue about a week ago in a previous letter, announcing that testing would be done for five school buildings. The testing was being done, according to Goetz's previous letter, in response to a Department of Labor notification, which was sent following an anonymous report about possible mold and air quality inside.

While Goetz's letter was released and posted on the district's website, a copy of the results was not. A representative from Syntax, the school district's public relations firm, explained that a FOIL request needs to be submitted.
