Darien Police Launch Winter Coat Drive

DARIEN, Conn. – With the holidays upon us, many are thinking about ways to help by giving to others. The Darien Police Department is doing its part by collecting coats for the needy for the winter.

This Sunday, the Darien Police Association will start its second annual winter coat drive. It will donated the gently used coats to Person-to-Person.

The coat drive was launched last year, when Officer Dan Skoumbros called Person-to-Person, asking whether the police could collect coats for the charity. Although the police had donated to Person-to-Person for years, this was the first big initiative to go out and collect coats.

The drive was more successful than anticipated. Skoumbros and fellow Officer T.J. Whyte delivered more than 200 coats to Person-to-Person for its emergency clothing center. More than 5,000 families in Fairfield County have received clothing from Person-to-Person.

If you have clean, gently worn coats and jackets that your family is no longer using, take them to the Darien Police Station at 25 Hecker Ave. From Nov. 27 to Dec. 3, a drop box will be in the building lobby for coats. The station is open 24 hours a day, so there’s plenty of time to give coats you’re not using to help someone in need.
