Wilton Residents Feel the Earthquake

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton resident Joseph Deidan is from Ecuador, so when the shaking started at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, he knew exactly what was happening.

"I come from a place with tremblers," said Deidan. "And I felt the tremblers sitting in the library."

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake centered about 87 miles from Washington, D.C., hit early Tuesday afternoon and it was felt in Wilton.

Gabe Imber from Weston and Jon Massari from Wilton were working their lifeguard shifts at Merwin Meadows when the shaking started. "You could see the water cooler moving," said Imber.

At first they assumed a large truck had just rumbled past the area, but then they started to receive tweets via Tweeter from friends asking whether other people had just felt the tremors.

But not everybody in town realized something had happened. Matthew Marquis is part of the road crew working on Old Ridgefield Road and was at lunch at the Diamond Deli when the aftershock hit.

"I didn't feel a thing," Marquis said.
