The two town justices, Mark Seedorf and Sue Simon, met with the Town Board this week to present their budget request, which they say meets with the board’s appeal to reduce spending by 2 percent.
The 2012 Justice Court budget is $163,330 and the judges are seeking $159,321 for next year.
Seedorf told the Board that it is essential that the court maintains its two full-time clerks. Last year, one of the positions was reduced to part-time status before eventually being restored to full time.
“In 2007, we got two full-time court clerks,” Seedorf said. “Since then, the number of cases has increased substantially. But we are current with all the [state] audit requirements.”
Seedorf noted that the court has generated funds in excess of what it costs to operate.
“But the court is not a revenue-creating agency,” he said. “We are about justice. This is a barebones budget and we ask the Town Board to approve it.”
The town is currently in the process of preparing the 2013 budget and is receiving budget requests from all its various departments.
“I want to compliment the justices coming in with a budget that is mindful of the town’s financial restraints,” said Town Board member John Pappalardo. “I was very impressed with their presentation. I would caution other department heads to follow suit.”
