A State Senate candidate, Rye City Councilwoman, mother of five, and an active Westchester school parent for years, Killian plans to use her leverage in the state senate to demand these formulas be changed.
According to Killian, Westchester's low funding level stems from two issues: Albany’s current appropriation formula and a regional cost index that unfairly categorizes Westchester with exurban and upstate rather than suburban counties. These are among the reasons, she believes, residents are being shortchanged year after year. That same lack of state funding directly adds to ever-increasing school and property taxes throughout the county, and results in cutbacks for arts, athletics, and other important enrichment programs for students.
