NORTH CASTLE, N.Y. - Newcomer Democrat David Buchwald beat out incumbent Republican Robert Castelli in New York's 93rd State Assembly district.
With 88 percent of districts reporting, Buchwald received 53 percent of the vote, totaling 22,532 votes. Castelli received 47 precent of the vote, totaling 20,073 votes.
Buchwald said Tuesday night that he was looking forward to serving the 93rd District.
"I'm so gratified by the people of this district to put their faith in me to represent them," Buchwald said. "I know there's a lot of work to do. But I'm committed to that task and enthusiastic about that opportunity."
Buchwald said it was a difficult campaign to unseat Castelli. "It was a race that we fought for in every way, whether it was knocking on doors, going to train stations or making phone calls," Buchwald said. "That's an effort I hope to continue going forward."
Castelli conceded close to midnight Tuesday.
"Based on statistical calculations, it's physically impossible for me to win my race," Castelli said. "I offer my opponent all of my help, best wishes and prayers in new endeavor that he will take."
Castelli, the incumbent, previously represented the 89th Assembly District. Castelli ran on the Republican and Conservative ballot lines. He originally took office in February 2010. Castelli, 62, previously served on the Lewisboro Town Board.
It was Buchwald's first time running for state assembly. He has served on the White Plains City Council for the past three years. Buchwald, 34, ran on the Democrat, Working Families and Independence Ballot Lines. Buchwald is also the Chairman of the Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council.
The 93rd District covers Bedford, Harrison, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, New Castle, North Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge and White Plains.
