The legislation addresses pay inequity, sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination in the workplace, human trafficking, domestic violence and family status discrimination, and strengthens women's health and reproductive rights. “It’s disheartening that women are still faced with economic barriers and inequalities in everyday life,” said Buchwald.
“We must send a forceful message that we will not tolerate discrimination. I strongly urge the State Senate to do the right thing this year by passing all 10 points of the Women’s Equality Act.”
Buchwald also noted that in today’s economy, women need more economic security – not less. In New York, women make just 84 cents for every dollar earned by men, creating a substantial yearly pay gap of roughly $8,275 between men and women working full time for the same level of work. “Equal pay and equal opportunity for women are not just issues about fairness,” said Buchwald.
“These are also issues that impact our economic growth and the financial security of middle-class families. I have said this before, and I will continue to speak loudly for women’s equality – it’s time we act.”
Buchwald attended the Family Planning Advocates Day of Action and met with the local branch of Planned Parenthood to show his support for the Women’s Equality Act.
Buchwald represents District 93 in the New York State Assembly which includes the the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, New Castle, North Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge and half of White Plains.
