South Salem Resident Defrauded By Scam

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – When a South Salem resident responded by telephone to a letter he had received, he disclosed his Social Security Number and was issued a check. However, upon presenting the check at his bank branch on May 23 he discovered it was fraudulent. The bank notified its Fraud Department and Lewisboro Police advised the victim to closely monitor his bank statement and credit cards for several months and to place a three-month fraud alert on his credit report.

The Lewisboro Police reported a number of incidents this week.

The Lewisboro Police also reported the following incidents:

A John Jay student working in the school library on May 21 left his computer for a moment to get a drink of water and discovered his Flash Drive had been stolen while he was away. He was particularly concerned because it contained four gigabytes of original music.
A South Salem resident became distraught when a 64-year-old man left his home on May 21 and did not return. The man has been under psychological care and has attempted suicide in the past. He is described as 6’-3” tall and about 220 pounds. He has a prosthetic leg.
A mother became concerned when her son left home on Friday, leaving a note behind. She informed police that the boy has an anxiety disorder, is on medication and has been violent in the past. Lewisboro Police notified Pound Ridge, New Canaan and Wilton Police as well as the New York State Police. They also canvassed the town roads and the Vista business district. Four or five hours later, the boy returned home of his own accord.
Police also dealt with several canine incidents. A passerby became concerned upon seeing a dog locked in a car for over a half-hour on a hot afternoon at the North County Shopping Center. Police were able to discover the car’s owner through a license plate check and asked the A&P to make a public service announcement to shoppers. The dog-owner came to the car and unlocked it. The dog was fine but police explained the danger of leaving a dog in a hot car.
A South Salem resident reported a missing beagle.
A dog without a license or ID tag was found in Waccabuc on Friday and corralled by a concerned citizen, who tied the dog to a tree and notified police. As the police were preparing to take the dog to the pound, a neighbor emerged, asking if anyone had seen his missing dog.
On Friday a driver notified police that he had collided with a dog which ran into Waccabuc Road as he was driving along. When the police officer arrived, he heard dog cries coming from the nearby woods. Following the sound, he found the dog, apparently a pit bull, tangled up in thorns and whimpering. The dog appeared to be bleeding from the head, had a severe eye laceration and a broken back leg. The officer untangled the animal, carried him to the car and took him to the Goldens Bridge Veterinary Care Center, the nearest hospital.
