Lewisboro Police Investigate Forgery Complaint

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – Lewisboro police are investigating a forgery case in which a local resident’s identity may have been stolen and several fraudulent checks from her bank account cashed.

Police were called to home on Smith Ridge Road in South Salem where the resident told them she had received a call from Chase Bank in Texas telling them a woman was trying to cash two of her checks and that the checks “did not appear right.”

The woman told officers she contacted Chase’s legal department, which informed her that two checks, in amounts of $2,165 and $2,456.80, were cashed at an unknown location and posted to her account.

The U.S. Secret Service was contacted and will begin an investigation of its own. The woman said she froze her bank accounts. Lewisboro officers provided the victim with information on identity fraud.

The following items were also reported by the Lewisboro police:

Handgun Found : On July 25, police were called to East Ridge Road in reference to a handgun found at a residence there. The original owner was deceased and the man responsible for the contents of the home discovered the weapon. Police ascertained that the gun was a .22 caliber Ruger target pistol. The man said he wanted to sell the gun but did not have a permit. Police performed a background check on the gun – which appeared brand new and never registered – and found no problems. The man will contact a federal firearms dealer and fill out the proper paperwork and the dealer will pick up the gun from the Lewisboro police department and then sell it on the man’s behalf.

Possible Streaker: Police received a report of a man walking naked on East Street in South Sale on Wednesday. Both Lewisboro police and state troopers canvased the area with negative results.

Speeding Car: Police were called to a residence on East Ridge Road on Wednesday on the report of a black Subaru Legacy that was seen speeding and sliding on the dirt road by some pedestrians. The witnesses said it was driven by a teen-ager with others in the car. They told police they’ve seen the driver doing this before. Police checked the area and discovered a vehicle at Cameron’s Deli with a lot of dust on it matching the description. The driver denied being on East Ridge Road.
