BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. – While three GlenArbor Golf Club staff members escaped a fire in their living quarters early Tuesday morning without injury, a fourth was away on vacation, said Carolyn Sherwin, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross.
All four lost everything in the 12:04 a.m. fire, and the three men who were there ran outside, “literally in what they were wearing,” Sherwin said.
“One guy ran out of the house with no shoes,” she said. “Throughout the night, we worked really closely with county emergency and Bedford Hills Fire Department. Luckily no one was injured and they’re being very well taken care of.”
The club’s management has relocated the staff, and the Red Cross is helping them financially. In addition to helping them buy new clothes, Sherwin said the Red Cross is walking them through the process of replacing identifications, like drivers licenses and car titles.
She said they will meet with the fourth staff member, a woman, when she returns from vacation to provide any assistance she may need.
After warming up in emergency vehicles on a cold Tuesday morning, the displaced staff were moved to the club house when its management showed up. The Red Cross provided them with blankets and a toiletry kit, including shampoo, tooth brushes and tooth paste.
“They had nothing,” Sherwin said. “It was a very long night. They’re starting on the road to recovery today.”
The Red Cross have responded to a lot of fires in Westchester this winter, Sherwin said.
“We have had some instances where people have had to run out of the house and have lost their (identification). “We're very lucky that some of our case workers know the process.”
Having a bank statement or a pay stub on file with your employer can help when replacing your identification, she said. Replacing car keys can also be difficult because you can’t just ask for a new set from the car dealer if your title is lost in a fire, as was the case in a house fire in Yorktown in November 2013.
“It’s a process. We make sure that they get on the right track,” she said.
