Firefighters arrived the home after 1:30 p.m. and found heavy fire, according to Croton Falls Fire Chief Jason Blauvelt, who was the first to arrive on scene.
The structure fire had consumed the front and left side of the building and Blauvelt called for mutual aid. The fire department was assisted by Somers, South Salem, Goldens Bridge and Bedford Hills, along with the North Salem Ambulance Corps.
The firefighters attacked aggressively and were able to extinguish the fire in 20 minutes, Blauvelt said. He added that they were not inhibited by the weather and the North Salem Highway Department did a good job of clearing the roads.
A man and two cats were in the home at the time of the fire, Blauvelt said. One cat survived after being administered oxygen and was transported to a veterinarian in Bedford Hills. Another cat perished in the fire.
The man, who was renting a home on the property, was able to escape without injury.
The fire was investigated by the county's arson and fire team and it was deemed to be an accidental electrical fire.
"The fire was not suspicious," Blauvelt said. "The mutual aid worked out great. We had 50-60 firemen on the scene. Everything worked out well."
Route 116 was reopened around 4:30 p.m.
