Incidents of phone scammers posing as IRS agents on the phone continue in the area and across the country, police report.

Such callers are often aggressive in demanding immediate payment of taxes or tricking a victim into sharing private information, according to police.

The scammers can sound very convincing in their apparent knowledge of their victim and routinely alter their caller ID to make it seem as if their calls are originating from the IRS, officials report.

The callers may also threaten a victim with immediate arrest by local police if payment isn’t made right away, police report.

Bedford police remind the public that the IRS will not demand immediate payment over the phone of any owed taxes.

Additionally, taxpayers are afforded the opportunity to question and appeal any tax bill, according to officials.

Further, the IRS will not demand a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card or wire transfer; the IRS will not threaten to involve police agencies in the collection of unpaid taxes, police report.

Bedford police encourage anyone who receives one of these calls to hang up immediately, and not to reply to any voice mails demanding immediate response.

Scams of this nature can be reported to the Treasury inspector general for tax administration. To contact TIGTA, call 800-366-4484, or click here.
