Alleged Lewisboro Shooter Told To Get His Own Lawyer

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – The case of a 78-year-old Lewisboro man who allegedly shot his neighbor in the back of the head last month has been adjourned for a month, during which time he will have to hire his own attorney.

Richard Wilson appeared Monday night before Lewisboro Town Justice Mark Seedorf, who continued the case until July 23.

According to Deputy Court Clerk Robin Harris, Wilson was told he can no longer use a court-appointed attorney.

“The judge felt he could afford one,” Harris said. “He owns his own house.”

Wilson did not enter a plea as local courts cannot dispose of felony charges. He was returned to Westchester County Jail, where he is being held on $50,000 cash bail.

Wilson was charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony, after police said he shot his neighbor in the back of her head May 24 on Sunny Ridge Road in the Lake Katonah section of Lewisboro. The woman was treated at Northern Westchester Hospital Center for injuries that police said were non-life threatening.

State troopers arrested Wilson three hours after the shooting at the Goldens Bridge shopping center. Police said a search of Wilson's residence resulted in the seizure of a quantity of firearms, including two unregistered handguns and a large quantity of ammunition.

Police said no motive for the shooting has been determined and said more charges may be pending.
