To the editor:

I am writing to urge Lewisboro voters to support Charlie Duffy for one of the two positions open on the town board. I have no doubt we will benefit from the return of his financial expertise and independence.

Our current elected officials are good people, but their belief that they were somehow serving the public by cross-endorsing all six incumbents to avoid an election shows just why such a deal is not conducive to good government. No one likes what goes on in Washington, D.C., but there is a middle ground between gridlock and an absence of criticism or accountability.

Duffy showed how to be bipartisan as supervisor, co-founding the Sustainability Committee and the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium with Dan Welsh, while working with the Republican majority to aid youth sports. The financial controls he instituted were recognized by Standard & Poor's.

In contrast, the current "collegiality" has led to some strange results. Gov. Andrew Cuomo instituted a tax cap to force local governments to deliver services more efficiently, yet the current board has refused to join Duffy and pledge to comply with the cap. Despite the efforts of Rob Astorino and our county legislator candidate Francis Corcoran, to stand up to the federal government and its attempt to take over our zoning, this board recently passed controversial amendments to our housing code opening the door for HUD to construct subsidized housing throughout the town including in our historic hamlets.

Just who is being served by this?
