The Rev. Jane Cumming, 89, Katonah Resident

KATONAH, N.Y. — The Rev. Jane Cumming, a Katonah resident and formerly of North Salem, died Sunday May 22. She was 89.

A native of England, Cumming attended Queen's College and was trained as a photographer by Kodak and worked for Sir Harold Gilles at Park Prewett Hospital in Basingstoke.

She lived around the world, including in France, Indonesia, Hong Kong, East Africa, Malaysia and Singapore.

She had various positions, including assistant to the director of British Information Services in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and assistant to the Secretary of the Cabinet in Nairobi, Kenya.

She moved to the United States in 1967 and settled in North Salem, becoming an active member of St. James Episcopal Church.

Cumming's home served as a foster home for 27 children from 1969-72.

Later in life, she received her B.A. from Empire State College in White Plains and in 1983 earned her Master of Divinity from The General Theological Seminary in New York City.

Ordained to the Episcopal Church in 1984, Cumming worked with the Diocese of New York until 2002, where she envisioned and served as the director of the Ministry With Persons With Disabilities.

In her retirement, Cumming was active with St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Mount Kisco.

Cumming is survived by her sons, James and Ruaridh; brother, John; sister, Susan; and three grandchildren, Max, Lila and Grace.

Cumming was predeceased by her husband, Ian Cumming; and parents, Leslie George and Esther Josephine Mary (Boyt) Housden.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11 at St. James Episcopal Church, 296 Titicus Road, North Salem.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks a donation be made to St. James Episcopal Church in Cumming's memory.
