LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- Alfred DelBello, a Lewisboro resident who served as mayor of Yonkers, Westchester county executive and lieutenant governor died on Friday. He was 80 years old.

DelBello's death was confirmed by State Sen. Terrence Murphy.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family of former Lieutenant Governor Al DelBello," Murphy wrote on his Facebook page. "A Lewisboro resident for some years now and one of my constituents, he was legendary in New York State politics and accomplished a great deal as County Executive from 1974 to 1982. He will be sorely missed."

DelBello was born in Yonkers on Nov. 3, 1934 and served as councilman in Yonkers before being elected mayor in 1970.

He was the first Democrat elected to county executive in 1973 and was re-elected in 1977 and 1981. He resigned in 1982 to become lieutenant governor to Gov. Mario Cuomo.

He resigned as lieutenant governor to work in the private sector as a lawyer.

DelBello, a graduate of Manhattan College and Fordham School of Law, was a partner at DelBello Donnellan Weingarten Wise and Wiederkehr in White Plains.

County Executive Rob Astorino learned of DelBello's passing early Saturday.

"We were from different parties but we were good friends and I always appreciated his advice and counsel," Astorino said. "Perhaps the greatest advice he shared with me, and something I’ve always adhered to is, always make sure you get home and spend quality time with your family.

"The job is hectic but always make time for your family. And today, the thoughts and prayers of my family go out to the DelBello family.”
