WESTCHESTER, N.Y. – Westchester County ranked sixth among the state's lowest unemployment rates recorded in February, according to preliminary data released Tuesday by the New York State Labor Department.
Unemployment rates for February show Westchester County at 7.6 percent, down from January when 8 percent of county residents were without jobs, the Labor Department reported.
Westchester’s preliminary rate is slightly higher than its neighboring counties in downstate New York. At 7.1 percent, Putnam and Rockland counties had the state's second lowest unemployment rates. The lowest rate was recorded in upstate territory Tompkins County at 5.8 percent.
Westchester’s unemployment rate was the same as reported in February 2012, the state Labor Department said. Overall, the state’s unemployment rate was 8.4 percent in February.
Nearly 36,000 people were without work across Westchester, of the 961,670 residents living in the county, the state data reported. More than 843,000 total residents were unemployed in February throughout the state.
