O'Mealia has participated in numerous school performances and assemblies, even when it meant stepping in at the last minute to help narrate a program.
O'Mealia was accompanied to the ceremony by his BOCES teachers and administrators and by his mother, Ruth O’Mealia. At the board meeting, he was presented with a certificate of recognition and a medal of honor by BOCES Director of Special Education Adam VanDerStuyf.
“Evtin is a very kind, outgoing young man who is always willing to help his peers and staff,” said Thomas Oaks, his teacher.
When asked what he enjoyed most about attending Walden, Evtin, who has perfect attendance so far this year, responded, “I met a lot of new people and it’s really fun.”
Evtin’s mother said he was “really flourishing” at the Walden School. “I’m very proud of Evtin tonight. I think he really deserves this award and I’m so proud of the plays he has participated in this year,” she said.
“I have such a loving mom; she’s always by my side," said O'Mealia after hearing his mother’s words.
