BREWSTER, N.Y. -- The victims in a violent head-on crash between a pickup truck and a Verizon truck on Route 22 on Tuesday have been identified, according to Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith.

David H. Mossman, 23, of Southeast, has been identified as the driver of the pickup truck.

The driver of the Verizon truck was identified as Joseph J. Politi, 49, of Orchard Poughquag, and his passenger was identified as Giuseppe Assenza, 48, of Poughkeepsie, Capt. William McNamara said.

Mossman was transported by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla with multiple injuries described as serious. Politi and Assenza were taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries. No further information is available on whether they were admitted or their conditions, said McNamara

Route 22 was closed to traffic for about six hours following the crash as the wrecked vehicles were cleared and investigators examined the scene to determine the cause.

The crash occurred at about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Route 22 and Route 124 (June Road), about a mile south of the Village of Brewster.

According to preliminary reports from sheriff’s deputies at the scene, the crash apparently happened when Mossman's northbound pickup truck crossed over the centerline and into the path of the southbound Verizon truck, McNamara said.

The vehicles collided head-on, with the force of the impact causing the Verizon truck to rollover down an embankment on the southbound shoulder of the road. The heavily demolished pickup truck came to rest on the northbound shoulder, he added.

A passing motorist came upon the crash and telephoned 911. Sheriff’s deputies and state troopers responded to the scene, McNamara said.

Mossman was pinned in the wreckage, and volunteer firefighters from the Brewster Fire Department and Croton Falls Fire Department needed about 40 minutes to extricate him using the Jaws of Life, McNamara said.
